While many people would associate Berghaus as being a German or Austrian brand it is in actual fact not only a brand which was established in the UK, it also still has a home in the UK. Berghaus was established in the north east of England in 1966 by two climbers, Peter Lockey and Gordon Davison. They started out importing and distributing Outdoor gear. In 1972 they began to design and manufacture their own products. Primarily Backpacks and Jackets, with the Cyclops back system in 1974 as one of the world’s first packs to have an internal frame. It was clothing where they really made their mark as one of the pioneer users of Gore-Tex. The name Berghaus was chosen to give the company credibility as many of the outdoor products in the 60s and 70s were made in Germany and/ or Austria and Berghaus loosely translates into Mountain Hut in German.
